DOE NNSA SSGF Seeks Applicants for 2025-26 Incoming Class

Location
Ames, Iowa
Date

Applications are being accepted through January 14, 2025 for the Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE NNSA SSGF), with an informational webinar set for November 14, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. CT. Candidates must be U.S. citizens who plan full-time, uninterrupted study toward a Ph.D. at an accredited U.S. university.

The DOE NNSA SSGF provides doctoral students with in-depth training in areas relevant to stewardship of the nation's nuclear stockpile: high energy density physics, nuclear science, or materials under extreme conditions. Senior undergraduates and first- or second-year doctoral students are eligible to apply.

Fellows receive exceptional benefits, including a $45,000 yearly stipend; full payment of university tuition and required fees; and an annual academic allowance. Renewable for up to four years, the fellowship includes a three-month research practicum at one of four national defense laboratory sites: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, or Sandia National Laboratories (California and New Mexico).

About the DOE NNSA SSGF: Established in 2006 and funded by the DOE Office of Science and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the program trains top leaders high energy density physics, fluid dynamics and pulsed-power technology; low energies and radiochemistry; and the behavior of materials under conditions of extreme pressure, temperature, deformation or strain rate. As of Sept. 1, the DOE NNSA SSGF has onboarded more than 100 students across 19 cohorts and representing a total of 44 Ph.D. institutions. More than 80 program alumni work at an expanding number of organizations, national laboratories and academic institutions actively engaged in addressing problems critical to the safety, security and reliability of the country's nuclear stockpile.

About Krell: Iowa-based Krell Institute supports technology-based education and information programs with technical assistance, management expertise and communications products; and collaborates with agencies and institutions to foster the nation’s competitive advantage in science and engineering.
