Influence of Chemistry in HMX-based PBX Initiation
Christopher Miller, Georgia Institute of Technology
Micromechanical simulations of the ignition of HMX-based PBX under loading due to impact by thin flyers are performed using a Lagrangian, cohesive finite element framework. The relative influence of chemistry on initiation is examined and the influence of each dissipation mechanism on the attainment of criticality is quantified. The ignition probability at any load intensity is established and the computational predictions are compared to experimental results in the literature.
