Alumni Elected to Lead SIAM Activity Group for CSE
Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) Alumni will hold three of four offices leading a Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) special interest group.
Members of the SIAM Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering (SIAG CSE) elected Stefan Wild as chair, Jeff Hammond as vice chair and Judith Hill as program director. Their terms begin Jan. 1, 2021.
Wild, a DOE CSGF recipient from 2005-2008, is a computational mathematician in Argonne National Laboratory’s Laboratory for Applied Mathematics, Numerical Software and Statistics.
Hammond, a DOE CSGF recipient from 2005-2009, is a principal engineer for Intel Corp.
Hill, a DOE CSGF recipient from 1999-2003, is a computational scientist and leader of the Scientific Computing Group at the National Center for Computational Sciences at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She also manages the Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) program at the Oak Ridge and Argonne leadership computing facilities.
Tan Bui-Thanh of the University of Texas at Austin will hold the fourth office of secretary.
The SIAG CSE “fosters collaboration and interaction among applied mathematicians, computer scientists, domain scientists and engineers” for research into “the theory, development, and use of computational technologies” to solve important science and engineering problems. The group “promotes computational science and engineering as an academic discipline and promotes simulation as a mode of scientific discovery.”
The SIAG CSE organizes a biennial conference and tracks members through a directory and email list. It recently established an early career prize.
