Alumnus Joining DOE as Computer Science Program Manager
Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) alumnus Hal Finkel has been named a computer science program manager for the DOE Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research.
Finkel, a fellow from 2007 to 2011, currently leads compiler and programming languages research for the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility at Argonne National Laboratory. Compilers are programs that translate computer code into machine-readable instructions. He also is a co-primary investigator on numerous endeavors in DOE’s Exascale Computing Project revolving around compilers, particularly LLVM, a widely used technology. At Argonne he also has helped develop the Hybrid/Hardware Accelerated Cosmology Code, which is a two-time finalist for the Gordon Bell Prize, the top award for outstanding supercomputing achievement.
Finkel earned a physics Ph.D. from Yale University in 2011. He will begin his new position on October 12.
