Summary of Research

We are all impacted by the oceans. They regulate climate, provide sustenance, and support jobs across the globe. Unfortunately, our oceans, and the benefits we derive from them, are threatened by climate change. Marine heatwaves (MHWs), periods of intense regional ocean warming have been increasing in frequency and intensity in recent decades. While MHWs can result in negative ecological impacts and some catastrophic events have been highly publicized, previous research has shown idiosyncratic MHW effects across ecosystems and events, suggesting a highly context-dependent response. My doctoral research will focus on characterizing the generalizable ecological impacts of marine heatwaves across ecosystems and events. I intend to combine computationally intensive methods including machine learning, empirical dynamic modeling, and Bayesian hierarchical frameworks with large ecological datasets in order to identify generalizable ecological impacts of MHWs that are difficult to detect with standard methods.
